This module is intended for small groups or entire classrooms of science students in middle or high school. By working through the module, students will begin with understanding the structure of DNA and conclude with making gene annotations that will assist real scientists in research labs.
The first three sections: DNA, Protein, and Chromosomes; Transcription and Translation; and Genome Seeking, provide background information for students before they work on gene annotations. Depending on your students, curriculum, and preferences, you may decide to have the students work through all three sections or only portions of any of the three sections.
However, the fourth section, Gene Discovery Through AtGDB, is necessary for students to build connections between their content knowledge and its application in order to do gene annotations. Here students will translate their vocabulary knowledge into the pictorial representations used in the genome databases they will be using.
